God's Perfect Will For Your Life

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” Chances are, you've heard this question at least once in your life; either as a child or a witty question in a job interview. I bet your first response was not to become the person God wants you to be. Let’s be honest, not many of us think with that mindset. We are taught that we can be anything WE want to be, to dream big and to go after OUR dreams. All of this is good and I believe this is true. I also believe that our dreams and goals should line up with God’s perfect will for our lives. Our relationship with God should motivate us to seek His will for our lives. How do you do this?

Know Him (Romans 12:2)

To know God’s perfect will, you must first know Him. Read the word and pray for a deeper revelation of who He is. Romans 12 challenges us to be different by not conforming to the world but to renew our minds. The end of verse 2 says that you will know God’s perfect will.

Trust Him (Proverbs 3:5-6 & Jeremiah 29:11)

When seeking God’s perfect will, we often want a detailed road-map outlining every step. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite work that way. The reality is, we only see bits and pieces of the map. This is where our faith has to kick in. We have to trust that God has a wonderful plan for our lives and no matter what it looks like at times, things will work out for our good.

Surrender (Matthew 26:39 & Matthew 6:33)

When Jesus was faced with betrayal and death he prayed at one moment for that “cup” to pass from him. He didn't want to do it. He then said something that is the ultimate sign of surrender; “Not my will, but Your will be done.” Jesus surrendered his own will for the perfect will of the one who sent him. In life we have choices and God gives each of us the free will to decide which path to take. Seeking God’s perfect will may not be easy, it may not bring you fame, it may not make you rich, and it is often not the preferred choice. However, seeking God’s perfect will for your life will be the most rewarding and long-lasting. The bible also gives us this promise in that if we seek Him first all of the “things” (goals, dreams, material possessions, etc.) will be added to you.

Reflection

God, thank you for having a wonderful plan for my life. Lord, I desire to know your perfect will. As I read your word and get to know more about you, I believe that you will lead me. I trust you and will continue to trust you even when I don’t understand. I surrender my personal agenda for your perfect will because I know your plans for me are good. Thank you for being such a good father. Amen
