Tis The Season

December 24, 2016

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”

This past week our church had the awesome opportunity to host a chime group filled with wonderful young ladies. One of them even decided to spend her 90th birthday fellowshipping with us. They played chimes to the tune of songs reminiscent of the Christmas season. As they played I began to have a nostalgic feeling and memories came to mind. I recalled Christmas programs and the smiles on my children’s face after spotting me in the crowd. I even recalled memories of my own childhood as the ladies played Silver Bells. It was in this moment that the Holy Spirit began to speak to me about remembering the true meaning of this Season. Around this time of year, it is so easy to get caught up in “stuff”. Some go into debt buying things while others sink into deep depression because they are unable to meet the requests written down on yet another Christmas list.

If asked, I would venture to say that most of us can’t recall what we got for Christmas last year or the year before. Some of our children have broken or thrown away the things we worked so hard to get them. Next year there’s going to be a new game system to replace the one you’re getting ready to buy now. I’m not saying not to buy things for the ones you love. I would, however, like to challenge the mindset or thinking that it is the material things that make us happy. These things are temporary, they depreciate, and there’s always some “thing” that can replace it. However, there is one thing that has been, is now and will always be and that is Love. Never forget that there is a God who loved us so much that He decided to give of Himself…His only begotten son. His name is Jesus Christ. He was born of a virgin in a little town called Bethlehem in a little manger. His beginning was very humble but He was born with a purpose so great; that was to save anyone who would dare believe in Him.

During this season, make your greatest attempt to create memories that will last a lifetime. If you have children, remind them of the timeless and very true Christmas Story in hopes that one day they will share it with their children.

Reflection
Jesus is very real and He loves you and wants to have a relationship with you. If you or anyone you know would like the opportunity to make Jesus the Lord of your life, pray this simple prayer;
Dear Jesus,
Thank you for loving me so much that you would give your life for me. I believe that you were born of a virgin, that you died on the cross for my sins and that you rose again. I ask you to forgive me of my sins, to come into my heart. I accept you now as my Lord and Savior. I believe my sins are forgiven and I have been made new.
Thank you, Jesus!

Amen
